I can't believe that next week is Thanksgiving! Time is flying by this year. I wanted to do some research on Thanksgiving eats, and pecan pie was my first thought. It turns out it was invented in New Orleans...one of my favorite cities. Here is a little bit more about this delectable treat...
Tradition holds that the French created pecan pie soon after settling in New Orleans, after being introduced to the nut by Native Americans. But attempts to trace the origin of this dessert have not found any recipes earlier than 1925, and well-known cookbooks such as Fannie Farmer and The Joy of Cooking did not include it before 1940.
The process for refining corn sugar was not developed until the 1880s. Thus, the corn syrup which is considered an essential part of the modern recipe was not available to the settlers of New Orleans. They most likely used cane syrup, which was a widely used sweetener. There is no doubt that the makers of Karo syrup popularized the dish, and many recipes specify Karo syrup by name as an ingredient.
Pecan pie is one of my favorite thanksgiving desserts. I love adding chocolate chips or chocolate sauce to the mix. Nuts and chocolate are a great combo! Click here for a great chocolate pecan pie recipe.

Natalie, pecan pie is my favorite. Chocolate with it is even better.
I agree with you the people from N.O. probably used cane syrup way before Karo syrup. A friend of mine from Louisiana gave me a jug of cane syrup for my birthday last year. I liked it, but boy is it sweet.
Unfortunately I'm allergic to pecans, but your recipe seams quite delicious. As a matter of fact i was in Florida this past weekend and sure enough, this dessert was on the menu, as it is for most restaurants.
lets just say, I had a hard time fighting the urge to undress the pie of its pecans!!!! Nonetheless, do you know any desserts i could try....I had key lime pie while i was there, its quite good, but i was thinking of something made with alcohol....maybe with some vanilla flavored vodka...what do you think?
Pecan Pie was my Mom's favorite. I think of her every time I have pecan pie. And nothing is better that chocolate and pecans.
Happy Thanksgiving to you!
